Yes, I hear you, Willena. I get nostaligic when I talk about homeschooling. It truly helps the parents form strong, positive bonds with their children. You know them soooo well as a result. My children have done well, too. All are college graduates and they are finding their way in the world in a variety of fields of endeavor. I will eternally treasure my time as a homeschooler.

True,
Many of us wouldn't even get accept to our colleges today. Of course, today there is more grade inflation, etc. It is wonderful to graduate with no debt. I had a little debt, and it seemed enormous to me after I graduated.

So true, Kevin,
I know so many folks who regret going immediately to college. You really want to be motivated and focused when you go to a university. It just makes sense to know who you are and what you want out of life before you put yourself on the hook for the megabucks that college costs.
Thanks for the comment.

Great video, Angela.

We homeschooled our 7 children for 19 years before a series of major stresses hit our family, resulting in my being burned out in 2007. My husband has always been very supportive, which contributed to our success as a homeschooling family.

Our older 4 did well at home, although I wondered at times because 3 of them were late bloomers academically. Irene (28) has been a nursing assistant for 6 years... James was in his last year in computer sciences (university degree, at home) and working full time at a local supermarket (until he was killed in a highway accident in Dec.'09)... Raewyn (24) is a kinesionics practitioner... and Vicki (22) has been a nursing assistant for 3 years.

In 2007 I put our 3 youngest into public school. Andrew did well, graduating with magna cum laud a year ago. Timothy hated it and came back home for his last two years. At 18, he's responsible enough to work on his own, so I have very little to do with it beyond a few guidelines. Nathaniel is doing well in elementary school, and will enter Gr.6 in a few weeks.

I miss the days when all of our children were at home, and I will never regret the years we spent homeschooling. I am equally thankful the younger boys have benefited from their years in school.

Hey Ben,

Your daughter is roughly the same age our oldest daughter was when we decided to homeschool our children. That was in 1984. We homeschooled all 7 of our children until 2007. Our oldest four went through high school at home, and our son James even did almost 4 years of university training by correspondence at home.

Yipes,

Many, many years ago I couldn't even get one because my parents had a business.
I ended up having to work while I went to school so that I could pay the rent and eat.

The good part was I finished with no debt.

glad I went to college years ago, it is much more competitive today.

Hi Angela:

This is great advice: don’t go to college unless you are truly ready. You are better off not even starting.

I think this does a lot of things for a student. It allows them to mature some more and it may also help clarify what they really want to do.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hey Angela,

I'm having some trouble on your blog today. Your full width settings do not work on a 21+" monitor (I run a 24"). This is due to exceeding the eye tracking limit for any ease of reading. Please set your primary content column to utilize a reasonable maximum width for those of us that have nice monitors or your blog becomes challenging to read for us. I also see that your commentluv plugin has gone missing and your twitter button has a really common and easy to overlook issue that you can read more about here: http://just-ask-kim.com/simple-twitter-share-button-mistake-costing-traffic/ Be in touch through the TSA community if you need feedback on getting these things working so you can get the best results for your blog.

I know what you mean, Steve. I have a friend whose daughter has qualified for state residency and financial aid, also. It is a tremendous benefit. Of course, the sticker-shock of colleges that charge more than $50K per year is indescribable. My daughter lived abroad for a while, and her friends were astonished when they discovered how much higher education in the USA costs. We are saddling our children with tremendous debt at such a young age when they have to take out such loans simply to obtain a college education.
